Since the 1990s, global catches have declined by about 1 percent per year, primarily due to overfishing. This raises the question: as more nations develop, will there be enough seafood to meet growing demand? In many parts of the world, fish are harvested more quickly than their stocks are replenished. 3 Taro Oishi, Atin Supartini, and Nobuyuki Yagi, “Changes in fish consumption desire and its factors: A comparison between the United Kingdom and Singapore,” Foods, July 2018, Volume 7, Number 7. For example, a recent survey in Singapore showed a fivefold increase in the desire to purchase seafood compared with only ten years ago. Typically, when a country’s GDP increases, per-capita protein consumption also increases, with the breakdown of protein source varying widely by country. Global demand is increasing, but barriers to scaling production remainĭemand for seafood is growing quickly. Throughout, our interviews with innovators in the alternative seafood space offer varying perspectives on how the industry can develop. ![]() Our research dives into solutions and products that are either on the market today or likely to be in the years to come. In this article, we explore the constraints facing seafood markets, as well as challenges specific to popular types of seafood. Although still in its early days, alternative seafood shows significant potential across three production options, each with its own advantages: plant-based, fermentation-enabled, and cultivated. So-called alternative seafood-substitutes for popular fish and shellfish such as tuna, salmon, and shrimp-provides one way to help scale seafood and provide high-end protein. And while aquaculture has been the primary source of new fish supply in recent years, it has not been able to keep pace with demand. This means future growth cannot rely on incremental growth in wild-caught seafood. 2 “Wild-caught seafood,” World Wildlife Fund (WWF), accessed April 21, 2023. That said, the amount of wild-caught seafood remains flat, with more than 85 percent of the world’s fisheries pushed to or beyond their limits. 1 The state of world fisheries and aquaculture 2022: Towards blue transformation, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), 2022. Projections show growth of 14 percent by 2030 versus 2020 levels, driven by growing markets in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Oceania. But those files also need to be deleteable together at some time.Billions of people rely on healthy oceans as a source of jobs and food, and demand for fish protein is only increasing. Then I have an identical backup and in case I need an older version I also still have that. I wish I could just hit a button in a hurry, have all the new files copied over and all the overwrites versioned as well as the deletes. Even more time if folders' names have changed and now don't match - sometimes leading to duplicates. Currently, with Beyond Compare I have to look at the differences and decide if it's ok to overwrite all the changes - that takes concentration and time. I just wish to plug in my external drive and have an internal partition being "synced" to an external copy. better identification of USB external partitions - I've mixed them up with changing drive letters and seen other software to uniquely identify it (although with a special directory in the root, which is a bad thing). automatic recognition of renames in the same directory or a level up or down ![]() It should be possible to delete these older versions quickly as a whole within a certain date range. Ideally it retains older files/folders with a date stamp or NTFS versioning or something even better. Purpose is the backing up of whole partitions (including system partitions) in a mirroring way, so that the result is a pretty much bootable and universally readable older copy. However, I've been using it for a long time as my backup software and that is really taking a lot of time and effort due to missing functions that I have to manually do and therefore my backup frequency isn't as high as it should be. I absolutely love and recommend Beyond Compare to compare directories and text files. ![]()
